Board approves wood burning rules

Spare the Air days can be issued in the summer and the winter, and it is those winter days that are the focus of new restrictions approved today by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The new rules ban using fireplaces and wood-burning stoves on Spare the Air days betwen November and February.

There were 30 nights in the winter of 2006 when cold air trapped smoke close to the ground and created unhealthly air conditions, according to air qaulity regulators.

The new regulations also place limits on excessive smoke and prohibit the burning of garbage.
