Navy to tear down Moffett Field hangar

The Navy has decided not to tear down Hangar One at Moffett Field. They will instead remove the structure's toxic panels and leave the steel framework in place.

The announcement comes more than two years after the Navy said demolition would be the most cost-effective way to clear the site of asbestos and other toxins.

The Navy reversed its decision because of the public outcry from advocates who want it turned into a museum.

Moffett Field was commissioned in 1933 as a naval air station and Hangar One housed the 785-foot USS Macon.
