The Cube is located on the Onizuka Air Force Base in Sunnyvale.
The Heritage Preservation Commission is calling on the city council to give the base historic designation.
Although much of what went on inside the Cube since it was opened in the 1950s is still classified, it is known for producing the first pictures of earth taken from space. It also captured some of the first evidence that the Soviet Union had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962.
The base was named in honor of Ellison Onizuka, the first Asian-American astronaut, who died in explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986.
A decision on its status is expected this fall.
