Former casino owner gets prison for taxes

SAN FRANCISCO

In a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, a judge Thursday ordered Rene Medina to serve 15 months in prison after he had pleaded guilty in October of last year to income tax evasion charges.

As part of the agreement, Medina admitted that between 1999 and 2001 he evaded paying federal taxes by having the casino make payments for personal expenses and fictitious business expenses for more than $1 million.

Medina has since paid to the government nearly $1 million in back taxes.

He will be begin serving his sentence in January.
