According to its research, 36 percent of traffic accidents involved vehicles crossing or turning at an intersection.
22 percent involved traffic that ran off the road. In 12 percent of accidents traffic was "stopped" on the road. In 11 percent of accidents traffic crossed into an opposing lane. In five percent off the accidents vehicles were traveling too fast.
The government compiled the statistics after investigating more than 5000 accidents over a two year period. Researchers hope the study will help determine what technologies might be most helpful in helping drivers avoid crashes.
