Firefighters control 2-alarm fire in San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA

The fire was reported around 7:20 p.m. at a two-story, 10-unit apartment complex at 4809 Atherton Ave., across the street from the Westgate Mall, according to Stallard.

The fire was contained to one unit, but firefighters had to tear into two other units to reach the flames, Stallard said.

The fire was declared under control at 8:15 p.m.

The blaze appears to have started in the basement area of the complex and spread to a unit on the first floor, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Two residents, both men in their 50s, suffered some smoke inhalation and were taken to local hospitals. There injuries were considered minor, Stallard said.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, according to Stallard.
