Thursday was the first day to return job applications. This process is only done about every four years, due to the sheer volume of applicants.
Fourteen-thousand applications were previously sent out which must be hand-delivered within the next few days.
"I got laid off a month ago. I heard about the fire department hiring. It's a childhood dream. I'm from the East Coast and I came out here 10 years ago and saw my first Asian firefighter and I said, 'Wow, we can be firemen, too," said applicant Troy Tran.
The department isn't hiring right now, so the applications will be processed and the jobs will be filled when they become available.
