Five Oakland police officers were injured Monday afternoon when the two cars they were riding in crashed into each other in West Oakland.

The impact of the crash was so great, that witnesses said later it sounded like a bomb went off.

"Bam; when I heard something just that loud I said, 'somebody got hurt,'" witness Charlotte Edwards said.

The officers were involved in a high-speed pursuit of what they believe was a stolen vehicle. Two squad cars chased a gold Kia through the West Oakland neighborhood, paralleling each other in case the suspect tried to get out of the car and flee on foot, Oakland police spokesperson Jeff Thomason said.

Witness said the squad cars reached unbelievably high speeds during the pursuit through a residential neighborhood.

The suspect got away when one the squad cars T-boned the other.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, but all five of the injured officers were taken to the hospital.

"No, they're just complaining of pain for the most part, maybe a couple cuts," Thomason said.

Suspects are still searching for the 2007 gold Kia van, license plate number 5ZWC521, and its driver.
