Santa Clara deputies win in 5-year lawsuit

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2004, and was heard in the U.S. District Court in San Jose from January 5 to January 20, said Lt. Ed Wise, who attended the court proceedings. The case was brought by Guiseppe and Lynette Campanella, of Gilroy, and alleged that sheriff's officers performed unlawful searches of their residence, made an unlawful arrest of Guiseppe Campanella, and used excessive force against him during two incidents during the fall of 2003. The couple sought $325,000 in damages. Between 2004 and 2009, attorneys for both parties were attempting to settle the case outside of court, and investigating facts association with the case, Wise said.
