Alameda Fire cuts back on quick response units

Alameda city firefighters will be cutting back on staffing of their quick response units to help balance the budget.

Fire Chief Dave Kapler says all five of Alameda's stations remain open, but as of Monday, one ambulance unit has been taken out of service to save on overtime costs.

The chief will decide on a day-to-day basis whether to brownout an ambulance or fire company.

The firefighters union has criticized the decision, saying it will impact public safety.
