A 16-year-old Richmond boy who allegedly fatally shot his 15-year-old friend Friday has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, a Richmond police sergeant said Tuesday.

Sgt. Bisa French said the boy, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile, was charged Monday. He was also charged with robbery for an unrelated recent incident, French said.

The boy called police shortly before noon Friday to report the shooting, which happened in a vacant apartment building in the 700 block of Carlson Boulevard.

The victim was identified as Cameron Russell, of Richmond. Police initially reported that Russell was 14 based on conversations with family members, but now say he was actually 15.

According to French, the boy told police he and Russell had been hanging out in the apartment and that he had shot his friend accidentally. He remains in custody in juvenile hall in Martinez.
