Drivers on one of the Bay Area's busiest stretches of freeway will finally be getting some relief with the opening of a new, continuous carpool lane in time for the Monday morning commute.

Southbound 101 through San Rafael has consistently been ranked as one of the worst morning commutes in the entire Bay Area.

The new carpool lane will open Sunday. A northbound lane is expected to be ready by spring.

The Highway 101 widening project began in 2002. It will cost about $200 million by the time it is finished.
