Oakland International had 87.72 percent of its flights arrive on time in the month, according to FlightStats, which examined data for 40 major airports in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Officials from the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates the airport, said the success was due to the consistently good weather in the area, and the fact that the main air carrier runway is used at only 60 percent of its overall capacity, allowing for more time between flights.
Officials also attributed the high amount of on-time arrivals was also due to the staff of the airlines, airport, Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies.
Southwest Airlines, which served 69 percent of the airport's 11.5 million passengers in 2008, ranked No. 3 among all airlines with 83.37 percent of its flights arriving on time in January.
Hawaiian Airlines, which ranked No. 1 among airlines with 90.47 percent of flights arriving on-time, also serves the airport with a daily nonstop flight between Oakland and Honolulu, Hawaii.
