Stephen Anthony Kachuck, 29, a transient from the Vallejo area, was driving a car stolen earlier today in Cotati, Lt. Bob McMenomey said.

Sgt. Dave Pedersen spotted the 2000 Honda Civic in the area of Stage Gulch Road and Adobe Road in Petaluma around 1:30 p.m.

Kachuck sped away but ran off the road near the Sonoma County dump on Stage Gulch Road, McMenomey said. A passing citizen pointed out Kachuck who fled from the Honda.

Deputies and the sheriff's department's helicopter searched the area and caught Kachuck. He was booked into the Sonoma County jail for vehicle theft, evading police, hit-and-run, resisting arrest, driving on a suspended license and giving false information to a police officer, McMenomey said.
