Sandoval-Gomez, a Sacramento resident, was speeding north on I-680 around 6 a.m. when he braked suddenly for traffic north of El Cerro Boulevard and lost control of his black 2002 Lincoln Navigator, California Highway Patrol officer Tom Maguire said.

The car veered off the highway and went up an embankment, striking an electrical box and rolling multiple times, Maguire said.

Sandoval-Gomez was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Maguire said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, Gilroy resident Christian Gutierrez, 25, was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
