Raley's offers 3,000 workers a buyout

The Sacramento based chain has nearly three dozen stores in the Bay Area, under the names Raley's, Nob Hill Foods, Food Source, and Aisle One.

The company plans to buy out one-fifth of its workforce. Mainly unionized store clerks with 15 or more years of experience. They'll be offered nine months worth of salary as severance.

Union representatives say they were told the buyouts are an effort to prevent layoffs.
