According to Oakland police statistics, so-called "Part-One" crimes -- a category that includes homicides, assaults, rapes, arsons and high-level thefts are down about 15 percent for the year.
Even including the killing of four Oakland police officers in March, police statistics show that the number of homicides has dropped by 23 percent, while robberies are down by 21 percent.
A police spokesman credits a shift to having more officers on the streets on the weekends and an increase in community involvement with helping to cut down on most crimes.
