Dublin resident James Leadstrom, 58, had just parked a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup when it started to roll backwards, according to the CHP. Leadstrom had apparently left the truck in reverse gear before getting out.
In an attempt to stop it, Leadstrom partially got back in the vehicle and mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes, causing the truck to accelerate in reverse, the CHP reported.
The pickup struck a parked 2007 Chevrolet Impala, and then a 2000 Toyota Celica, according to the CHP. The impact with the Celica threw Leadstrom backwards, hitting a 1999 Honda motorcycle and landing at the rear of the truck. As it continued to roll in reverse, the truck rolled over Leadstrom and then hit a 2005 Nissan Altima.
Leadstrom suffered major head trauma and internal injuries, according to the CHP, and was taken by helicopter to Eden Medical Center.
The incident remains under investigation.
