DUI arrests up in CA from 2008 holiday weekend

The California Highway Patrol has made 454 DUI arrests statewide during its maximum enforcement period for the July 4th holiday weekend, up from 342 DUI arrests at the same time last year, a sergeant said.

From 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. today, five people have been killed in DUI-related crashes statewide, three of which were on CHP-patrolled roadways, according to CHP Sgt. Trent Cross.

Last year at this time where were four reported fatalities related to driving under the influence, Cross said.

The reporting period for maximum enforcement runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
