Its police and fire departments are anticipating a busy evening of illegal fireworks.

Oakland police is cracking down on illegal fireworks. Violators older than 16 will be cited and could face fines of $1,000. With that and proper safety protocol, even small fireworks can cause a problem.

"Every year in Oakland we have multiple serious injuries from fireworks. The other issue that we have 4th of July is traditionally our busiest day for fires in the city of Oakland. So far today we've had two structure fires and they are under investigation. Generally each 4th of July we have multiple structure fires that are directly related to fireworks and along with that comes burning trees, damage and potential for loss of life," said Oakland Fire Department Chief Eleanor Bolin-Chew.

Chief Bolin-Chew stressed even if you think you are not part of the problem with some of the fireworks, you are and really should not use them. She is advising everyone to catch the safer show at Jack London Square.
