San Jose Police say five people are behind a massive, multi-city prostitution ring -- based in San Jose. The online ring has been under investigation for nearly a year.

"Being on the internet, they're so mobile that literally these individuals could be operating without even having a home base," says San Jose Police Officer Jose Garcia.

But they did have one that police know of; an upscale apartment complex on The Alameda in downtown San Jose. Investigators think some of the pimps not only lived there, but that prostitutes also worked out of that location.

"Everything this side or behind has always been family oriented and it's certainly nothing I've ever seen or heard of, definitely news to me, and I'm a little surprised myself," says Mike Singh, a San Jose resident.

"It's upscale and it wouldn't even dawn on you that something like that would be happening," says Mike Malik, a Quizno's owner.

Police also arrested 16 other people last week -- most of them prostitutes. The thought is the suspects first placed the on line prostitution ads on Craigslist, but when the site shut down its erotic services section, the ring then focused on myredbook.com an adult services site.

Investigators are sure dozens of people were involved in this ring. Search warrants were issued in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Alameda Counties.
