Weight loss surgery varies by location

A new report has found the safety and cost of bariatric surgery for obese patients depends largely on where it is performed.

Patients who had the weight loss procedure done at hospitals that performed a low volume of these surgeries were 67 percent more likely to have medical complications.

Having the surgery in California will also raise the cost substantially -- the same surgery out of state costs a patient about $35,000 less.

These findings are published in a report from Health Grades, Inc.
