A citizen called 911 at around 8 a.m. to report a man's body in the bushes in the unit block of Bovet Road near the Borel Square Shopping Center, San Mateo police Capt. Kevin Raffaelli said.

Officers responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Authorities believe the man was killed between midnight and 2 a.m. Sunday, according to Raffaelli. Based on the initial investigation, police do not believe that the incident was a random act of violence. No one is in custody for the murder.

"On behalf of the city of San Mateo, our hearts go out to the involved victim's family," San Mateo Mayor Brandt Grotte said in a statement. "We will dedicate our Police Department resources to bring those responsible for this violent act to justice."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the detective division of the San Mateo Police Department at (650) 522-7650, or the anonymous tip line at (650) 522-7676.
