A necropsy on the young male harbor porpoise found its death was "consistent with stress associated with being stuck in the reeds in the creek," said Jim Oswald, spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

Oswald said that both the porpoise's struggle to get out of the reeds and the subsequent rescue effort likely contributed to the stress.

The porpoise was rescued shortly after 2 p.m. from the San Tomas Aquinas Creek, but died minutes later while being taken to the Marine Mammal Center.

It had apparently swum several miles from the San Francisco Bay through the Alviso Slough to the creek.
