The incident happened around 8:20 a.m. at a construction site where a backhoe apparently broke a natural gas line beneath the pavement.
The order covered the area near the intersection of Harness Drive and San Ramon Valley Blvd.
People were warned to shelter in place until the gas was cut off, which was around noon.
No injuries were reported.
