Ground was broken Friday on the $5.1 million project that will include a large new station entrance, updated security cameras and a new lighted walkway, according to BART. Officials said they expect it to be done within a year.
BART Board President Thomas Blalock said almost 5,000 people exit the Balboa Park station daily, and the new walkway will provide safe access between BART and the San Francisco Municipal Railway.
The new entrance will be a 1,500-square-foot mezzanine on the northwest side of the current building, according to BART. It will have a 10-foot wide concrete ramp for disability accessibility, plus upgraded pathway lighting and new security cameras.
According to BART, officials and representatives from a local community group dedicated the new entrance and walkway to community advocate Anthony G. Sacco, who died in 2008.
