The overpass was shut down to both northbound and southbound traffic around 8:20 a.m. after a truck hit a portion of the bridge, damaging several girders, California Department of Transportation spokesman Bernard Walik said.

Caltrans crews arrived this afternoon to inspect the bridge and shortly before 5 p.m. deemed the overpass safe, Sunnyvale spokesman John Pilger said.

All northbound and southbound lanes of the bridge were set to reopen at 5 p.m., but the ramp from northbound Mathilda Avenue to northbound Highway 101 will remain closed indefinitely because that ramp travels underneath the damaged area, Pilger said.
