Shortly after 1 a.m., Pinole police officers spotted a vehicle that had just been reportedly carjacked, according to French.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and a pursuit ensued, French said.

The suspect vehicle traveled into Richmond on Richmond Parkway before turning right onto Atlas Road, where the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed, according to French.

After the crash, there was an exchange of gunfire between Pinole police officers and at least one of the three suspects, and one of the suspects was killed, French said.

A second suspect was taken into custody by police, while the third man fled and has not been found as of 1 p.m., she said.

Richmond police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office are assisting the Pinole Police Department in investigating the incident, according to French.

No police officers were injured, and the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard procedure, French said.
