Two deputies initiated a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle they spotted near Surf View Drive and Marina Road in Bay Point at around 9:45, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

When the officers approached the vehicle, the male driver and sole occupant allegedly attempted to ram the car into them, Lee said.

One officer was injured, Lee said, and was treated at John Muir Medical Center. Further investigation was needed to determine if the injury was inflicted by contact with the stolen vehicle.

Both officers opened fire at the suspect driving towards them, who was mortally wounded in the exchange.

The Contra Costa County district attorney's office will be conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting together with the sheriff's office, Lee said.

The two involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
