Captain Patrick Moloney will step down effective October 15th and he's been placed on administrative leave until then.
Bar pilots are supposed to guide ships safely through the Bay, but it was a bar pilot who was blamed for steering the Cosco Busan into the Bay Bridge two years ago.
Moloney was said to have been instrumental in the bar pilots' investigation of that spill, but now the bar pilots commission is being audited, and the results are due out in November.
