Teachers may get power to take phones

Teachers in the South San Francisco Unified School District may soon have the power to confiscate students' cell phones and search their text messages if they believe the children are using the phone to cheat on tests.

The school board is currently considering the policy after hearing reports from schools nationwide about students using cell phones to take pictures of tests and then texting those pictures to friends.

Officials say no student in the district have been caught doing it. Critics say the policy would constitute an invasion of privacy.
