Gene linked to breast cancer found

Scientists have made their most important breast cancer discovery since the 1970's.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have pinpointed the gene linked to more than half of all breast cancers.

The gene NRG1 normally acts like a brake, preventing cancer cells from growing. But if the gene is damaged, the brakes are off, allowing cancer cells to grow into a tumor.

The hope is this discovery will help experts target therapies for specific cancers.
