Companies like the Bay Area's 23 & Me and Navigenics offer individuals the chance to test their genetic makeup for disease risk factors.
Researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute, a non-profit genomic research group, tested the accuracy of these tests. They found the DNA scan results to be accurate, but found the way the companies interpreted the results were greatly different. Only 50 percent of the disease predictions were the same between the companies.
