Pelosi took issue today with a news release by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which said the American commander in Afghanistan should: "put her in her place."

The speaker called the statement quote sad and implied it was sexist.

"They really don't understand how inappropriate that is," said Speaker Pelosi. "I'm in my place. I'm the Speaker of the House, the first woman Speaker of the House. And I'm in my place because the House of Representatives voted me there. But that language is something I haven't even heard in decades."

The committee's press release accused Pelosi of backing down to liberals in her caucus who oppose General Stanley McChrystal's call for additional troops in Afghanistan.
