Sacramento has plan to battle homelessness

The mayor toured the site of a former tent city with journalist Lisa Ling, who gave it national attention last spring on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

The camp area, which had about 250 tents, has been cleared away, and Ling was impressed by the city's effort to help the homeless.

Johnson says the Sacramento Steps Forward campaign is a call to action for the community to get involved.

Organizers say the initiative will help provide homes for more than 2,000 homeless people in Sacramento.
