"In general, they pay much more attention to the value of the product," said cofounder of Ubergizmo Hubert Nguyen.

Talking about consumer electronics attitudes in this economy is Hubert Nguyen, cofounder of Ubergizmo, host of this event to unveil the Web site's top 10 technologies for this gifting season. Among the winners: Sony's PlayStation 3, Hubert's personal favorite since he comes from a game design background.

"It's smaller, and, most importantly, it's cheaper than it was last year," said Nguyen.

And one of the smallest devices to play a Blu-Ray disc.

HP took honors for its patented manufacturing process to embed lace into a netbook. Why?

"Netbooks, they are all kind of slow. They don't have high performance, so it's better to have a good-looking netbook when you go to that Starbucks, no?" said cofounder of Ubergizmo Eliane Fiolet.

Every holiday season, you see lists of gifts for under $5, gifts for under $10. This is a list of gifts for under $500. What does that say about the gadget gift giver?

If you spend on home entertainment, you save by not going out.

"If you have the right system, I think, if you have a surround sound system and a really large display, I think people are getting a pretty good experience," said Intel Consumer Production's Steve Brandt.

Intel was a sponsor of this event, as was Dolby, taking care of that surround sound experience for the first time in handheld devices; also showing off the technology of Vudu, the only video entertainment service to stream Dolby surround.

"The newness here is to bring that very high quality experience that the consumers have seen in the theater to the home, with multi-channel surround sound. And even on a mobile device, now you can have surround sound on your little phone, watching a small 2-by-4 movie," said Dolby EVP Ramzi Haidamus.

To expand the list, Ubergizmo.com has opened voting up to the public on the site.
