Watchdog group wants to stop smart meters

A consumer watchdog group is asking state regulators to halt the installation of PG&E's new smart meters.

The smart meters provide a digital readout that can be read directly from PG&E headquarters, eliminating the need for a meter reader to visit your home.

But the Utility Reform Network says the meters are flawed, and have led to substantially higher electric bills.

The state Public Utilities Commission has OKed the hiring of an independent consultant to test them.
