Storm wreaks havoc on Bay Area roadways

HAYWARD, CA

Caltrans spokesperson Allyn Amsk told ABC7 crews were scrambling to keep up with all the holes exposed by the continual rain.

Along East 4th Street (Highway 185) in San Leandro, a three-person crew stopped every few hundred yards to pour a mixture called "cold asphalt" into each gap. It is designed to harden quickly, even in wet weather.

According to Amsk, the fix is only temporary. Sometimes the patch washes out in a matter of hours. Caltrans plans to return to the trouble spots with a more permanent repair, once the storms subside.

Dublin mechanic Rick Camacho explained, besides all the flat tires, potholes can cause more serious damage to a car's tie rods and alignment, which can cost several hundred dollars to repair.
