Vallejo police are seeking solutions and reasons in the wake of a recent spike in violence.

A gunman is on the loose after he killed a 27-year-old man Sunday night on Mark Avenue at Leonard Street. Mark Anthony Davis Jr., a Vallejo resident, was found injured in the street. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

The shooting was reported at 6:39 p.m. There was a quote in the Vallejo Times Herald from a police sergeant that said it took over 30 minutes to respond to reports of shots fired because the nine officers who were on duty were tied up with other cases. But on Monday, the police department is contradicting that. The police department said there were several cases, but it didn't take nearly that long to respond to it. A Vallejo police spokesman said that it took police about four minutes to respond to the shooting.

"There was no calls of shots fired that I researched today that took 30 minutes for us to arrive to," said Vallejo Police Lt. Abel Tenorio.

There has been a recent spike in high profile crimes in Vallejo including a mob that beat up a city worker and the shooting of a female ice cream truck driver.

Vallejo police will be the first to admit that they are short staffed because the city is in financial trouble. Police point out that despite their staffing setbacks -- they made arrests in both the mob beating and the ice cream driver shooting.

Vallejo police also had two sheriff's deputies on duty with them Sunday night and they hope to have more help from the CHP in the future.
