San Jose police scale back force for Fat Tuesday

SAN JOSE, CA

Three years ago the party got out of hand, vandals smashed windows of more than a dozen small businesses along East Santa Clara Street.

For the past two years, a stepped-up police presence kept the party peaceful. So peaceful, in fact, that this year the city will only put 40 officers on the street -- which is the normal number for a Tuesday night.

Officials say they will have additional officers standing by on "high alert", in case they are needed.
