Oakland hosts first marathon in 25 years

OAKLAND, CA

An estimated 6,000 people took part in Sunday's marathon and half marathon. It started downtown, headed through Rockridge and Piedmont Hills, then down Fruitvale past the waterfront and Lake Merritt, and ended at city hall downtown.

Race organizers and spectators hoped the event could help cast Oakland in a positive light.

"I thought it was a raid going on around here. Nothing bad was happening because I did see a lot of police. But, it's good," said spectator Perry Elyun. "It's a nice day out here. That's why I came outside. Nice sunny day. Hopefully everybody can get along with everybody."
