They were being held for questioning in the death of a 79-year-old man, who lived at a home on 14th Street in Oakland.
The man was taken to the hospital last night in grave condition; he died early this morning.
The two people taken into custody were caregivers -- a 30-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman.
"We were notified by the Summit Hospital staff; the doctors there noticed the injuries, his condition, the body's condition, and notified the Oakland Police Department that this could be a possible elder abuse case," Ofc. Jeff Thomason said.
The two caregivers were released, pending an autopsy and a coroner's report.
