A 3-year-old boy was seriously injured this evening when he fell from a second-story window of a Bayview District home, a police spokesman said.

It appears the boy, who was in the home in the 800 block of Meade Avenue, pressed against the screen of a living room window while his mother was in the kitchen cooking, Officer Samson Chan said. The screen gave way and the boy fell from the window, landing head first on a car below, Chan said.

He was rushed to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that are considered life threatening, according to Chan.

A preliminary investigation indicates "there is no criminal element involved," Chan said.

"The investigation indicated that this was an accident," he said. "The mother was home and there was a screen on the window."
