Dozens cited in cockfighting operation bust

Deputies seized 40 cockfighting roosters during the bust, but Animal Services euthanized the roosters, saying it does not adopt cockfighting roosters.

The location of the cockfighting operation was at a property in the 100,000 block of 72nd Avenue in Riverside County near the Imperial County border.

Deputies and officers cited about 30 people for attending a cockfight, which is a misdemeanor.

Animal Control says usually in these operations, people scatter. However, the Sheriff's Department's presence was so well coordinated with off-road and quad vehicles that not many people escaped.

"It sends a message to those who attend these illegal fights, that we're taking them very seriously," said Sgt. James Huffman of Riverside County Animal Services.
