State Senator Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, cleared the biggest hurdle on his way to becoming California's lieutenant governor.

The Assembly confirmed his nomination to the largely ceremonial post by a 51-17 vote. The senate is expected to follow suit.

Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Maldonaldo when John Garamendi resigned after winning a seat in congress last November.

But Democrats Dominate the assembly and rejected Maldonado's confirmation in February. Maldonado is also running for the g-o-p nomination for lieutenant governor in next month's primary.
