Police end search for gunman

SAN JOSE, CA

Officers responded to a report of an attempted robbery about 8:30 a.m. at the Tropicana Shopping Center in the 1600 block of Story Road, Garcia said.

The man attempted to rob one of the stores in the shopping center and then discharged his firearm as he fled from the store and into a residential neighborhood behind the shopping center, Garcia said.

The incident prompted a lockdown of two schools: O.S. Hubbard Elementary School at 1745 June Ave. and A.J. Dorsa Elementary School at 1290 Bal Harbor Way. Both schools were reopened at about 9:30 a.m.

No one was injured, Garcia said.

It was not immediately clear which stores the gunman was targeting, but it appears that nothing was stolen from any stores in the area, Garcia said.

Officers recovered bullet casings and were trying to determine where the bullets struck.

Garcia said police terminated their search at about 11:30 a.m. after scouring nearby residential neighborhoods.

"We searched as thoroughly as possible and we have not been able to locate the individual involved," Garcia said.
