Veterans from several wars honored their fallen comrades at Veterans Memorial Park in Alameda.

"These were men and women who dreamed of ultimate peace and great things for America," said Alameda Mayor Mayor Beverly Johnson. "As one solider wrote, 'My death will mean nothing if we do not prevail. I die so that Americans can live in freedom.'"

The organizers of Monday's ceremony left several empty chairs to honor service members who remain listed as "Missing in Action" or as "Prisoners of War."
