A Coast Guard cutter based in San Francisco is heading to the gulf to help with clean-up efforts. The 225 foot Aspen left its home port at Yerba Buena Island yesterday.

The ship's primary mission is to help with navigation and search and rescue, but it can also be used to skim oil.

Forty-one men and women aboard the cutter will join more than 180 other California based Coast Guard personnel assigned to oil spill duty in the gulf.

The Aspen is expected to be deployed there for several months.
