Teachers from San Jose's East Side High Schools have agreed to major concessions with the school district to try to avoid drastic layoffs including ending the school year before memorial day.

The teachers have also agreed to five furlough days and an increase in health insurance co-pays. Class sizes will also increase.

The East Side Union High School District, which is the largest in Northern California, says the concessions are a good start, but warns three other school employee unions.

The district needs to close a nearly $20 million budget deficit.
