More than 12,000 nurses throughout California are set to hold a one-day strike this week as part of what could be the largest registered nurse walkout in U.S. history.

The nurses plan to walk off the job at five UC hospitals including UCSF on Thursday. Another 12,000 nurses from the same union in Minnesota are also planning a Thursday walkout.

The nurses union says they are striking over inadequate staffing levels and patient care.

On Tuesday, the California Public Employment Relations Board plans to go to court to ask for a temporary restraining order preventing the strike.
